Local search and your Google Business Profile
How to get into the map pack for searches that include a location. Business Profile optimisation, category choice, and NAP consistency.
For searches that include a location, Google puts a map and three businesses above the results. "Software company Istanbul" and "accountant near me" are that kind of search. It is called the map pack, and it takes a large share of the clicks.
The way into that pack is not your website. It is your Google Business Profile.
Three things determine map pack ranking
Proximity. How close you are to the person searching. The factor you have least control over.
Relevance. How well your profile matches what was searched. Category choice, service list, and description decide this.
Prominence. Reviews, website authority, and consistent mentions across the web.
You cannot change the first; the other two are directly in your hands.
The fields most often left empty
Primary category. The single most important setting. "Software company" and "computer consultant" surface for different searches. Look at which category your competitors use.
Service list. Add every service you offer, one by one. This list widens the range of searches your profile can appear in.
Opening hours. If they are missing, the profile counts as weak. People filtering by "open now" also never see you.
Photos. Profiles that add photos regularly are treated as more active. Office, team, work in progress.
Questions and answers. You can add and answer the questions your customers ask. Almost nobody does this.
NAP consistency: dull but decisive
NAP means name, address, and phone. All three need to be written identically everywhere: on your website, in your Business Profile, in directories, on social media.
Even differences like "St." versus "Street" or a phone number with and without a country code weaken the match. Google cannot merge records it is not certain belong to the same business.
Manage your address and phone from a single place on your site so different pages do not spell them differently.
Reviews
Review count and freshness affect map ranking. But buying fake reviews puts the profile at risk and is easy to spot.
The method that works is the boring one: ask a satisfied customer for a review once the work is finished. Sending the direct review link substantially raises the response rate.
Reply to every review, including the negative ones. Profiles that reply are treated as more active.
Profile posts and freshness
You can publish posts on the profile: announcements, offers, new services. They appear for a limited time but they signal that the profile is active.
A short post once a week does more than a long one once a month. You do not need to produce content; writing about a job you finished or a service you added is enough.
Do directory listings still matter?
Partly. Registering with hundreds of low-quality directories does nothing, and actively hurts if it creates NAP inconsistency.
The approach that works is few and correct: the recognised directories in your sector, your chamber of commerce record, a professional association listing if you have one. Write the name, address, and phone identically in every one.
Old and incorrect listings cause problems too. If you have moved or changed numbers, finding and fixing the stale records left online has a direct effect on ranking.
What your website contributes
The site alone does not get you into the map pack, but it supports it:
- The address and phone on your contact page matching the profile exactly.
- Structured data making the business information machine-readable.
- A page that genuinely describes the area you serve.
A warning: producing dozens of near-identical pages, one per district, is the opposite of this. Google recognises the pattern and treats it as low-quality content.
How to measure the result
The Business Profile provides its own statistics, and there are three things worth watching:
- How many searches found you, and with which words? This list tells you which services should be more prominent.
- How many people got directions or called? That is the real result, not impressions.
- How many searches used your name directly? Rising brand searches mean your recognition is growing.
Do not measure your ranking by searching on your own phone. Google factors in your search history and location, so what you see is not what everyone sees.
A week of work
- Verify ownership of your Business Profile.
- Review the primary category and compare it with your competitors.
- Add every service, one by one.
- Fill in opening hours.
- Make the address and phone on your site match the profile exactly.
- Send a review link to your last five customers.
